Every Step of the Way

“Women are like teabags”

Have you ever wondered how much more you can take or why you are being tested? Most of you have probably heard the phrase, “God will only give us what we can handle. Apparently, God thinks I’m a bad ass!”  Well, I am not bad ass by any sense of the word, but like many of you, I’ve had to deal with a lot of things in my life and am still here to write about it.

My Story:

At 20 years old, I was in a terrible rollover auto accident which left me with a fractured skull, broken facial bones and the need for reconstructive surgery on my left ear.

At 30 years old, I was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy, which left the right side of my face paralyzed for over 5 months. If you’ve never had this or don’t know anybody who has, let me tell you, it is extremely painful.

Just over a year later, I was diagnosed with a Meningioma (brain tumor).  I’ll never forget the morning I received the phone call from my physician. I had just fallen asleep after working the midnight shift as an Emergency Dispatcher for the MI State Police. My boys were in school and my husband was at work. The ringing phone woke me, “Tie, this is Dr. XXX. Your MRI shows that you have a brain tumor and I’ve scheduled you to see a neurosurgeon tomorrow morning.”  I remember the feverish feeling that flooded my body. After we talked for a few minutes, I sat in desolation on the floor next to my bed and cried for what seemed like hours before attempting to call my husband and my mother. It was a week of daily MRI’s before the surgery and a year of recovery afterwards. I have several side effects from the surgery, and I will have them for the rest of my life. I’m fortunate, having these side effects far beats the alternative.

A few years later, after having another surgery, I was hospitalized with blood clots in my lungs and not long after this, I lost my father and my mother-in-law within two weeks of one another.  It felt as though life kept sending me blows but the world kept turning.

There were many other small things along the way and a few things since, but the main point I’m trying to make is this, “We, as human beings, are stronger than we give ourselves credit for being.” Oftentimes we get down on ourselves or are feeling like we can’t handle the things going on in our lives, but we can!  Eleanor Roosevelt was spot on when she said, “Women are like teabags. You don’t know how strong they are until you put them in hot water.”

Strength Will Find You:

I think of the things I’ve been through and then I see friends going through much worse and my problems suddenly seem minimal. A very good friend of mine lost both of her children within two years of each other. Both were parents and both were in their 20’s. The devastation she went through and continues to go through is something no parent should ever endure.  She struggles through every day. Her will and determination are admirable. Some days are easier than others but thankfully she has a great group of friends and a family who supports her every step of the way.

Another extremely close friend has battled an extraordinarily rare form of cancer. She has had multiple surgeries because of it. A one point she said to me, “I just want to live long enough to see my daughter get married and to hold my first grandchild.” She has exceeded her own expectations. Her daughter married a few years ago and she now has three beautiful grandchildren, one from her daughter and two from her son and his wife.

The world can be a crazy place and although we don’t always have control over the hand were dealt, we do have control of how we play that hand. An especially important person in my life once said to me, “Life will throw you curve balls, but you have to cock your elbow, step into the pitch and swing with all your might.”  You can obviously tell he was a baseball fan, but nonetheless, his words made an impact and have stuck with me for over two decades.

Although I may not know you personally, I feel confident in saying “You are stronger than you know!” Please remember this and pass it on to the people in your life who need to hear these words.
